Understanding Forex Market Hours

The foreign exchange market is unique because it remains open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. However, not all trading hours offer the same opportunities. Volatility, liquidity, and average spread sizes change dramatically depending on which major financial centers are currently open for business. Our Forex Market Sessions tool helps you track the four major global trading sessions: Sydney, Tokyo, London, and New York.

The Four Major Trading Sessions

  • Sydney Session: Often considered the start of the trading day. While it is the smallest of the major markets, it sets the initial tone for the week on Sunday evening (EST). Expect lower volatility and movement, mostly affecting AUD and NZD pairs.
  • Tokyo Session (Asian Session): As Sydney winds down, Tokyo takes over. This session accounts for a large portion of global trading volume. JPY crosses see the most action, and ranges tend to be well-defined, making it a favorite for range-bound trading strategies.
  • London Session: The true powerhouse of forex trading. London handles roughly 43% of all global forex transactions. Volatility spikes immediately as this key European market opens. Most major trends begin during the London session, making it ideal for breakout trading.
  • New York Session: The second-largest trading center. The US dollar (USD) is involved in over 85% of all forex trades, meaning this session heavily influences the global market. Economic news releases and Federal Reserve statements frequently trigger massive price swings during New York hours.

The London / New York Overlap

The most critical time of the day for day traders and scalpers is the London/New York session overlap, typically lasting from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM EST. During this four-hour window, the two largest financial centers are fully active simultaneously. This overlap provides the highest liquidity, the tightest spreads, and the most dramatic market volatility. Major currency pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/CHF experience their largest daily moves during this highly-active period.

Why Track Session Times?

Trading without knowing which session you are in is like sailing without a map. Smart money algorithms operate based on the specific liquidity profiles of each session. By utilizing our live session clock, you can optimize your entry timing, avoid low-liquidity "dead zones," and ensure you are positioned favorably before the explosive volatility of major market opens.
